Piezo Crystal Oscillator


  • They are often simply called crystal oscillators.
  • They work on the basis of the piezoelectric effect:
    • A crystal with piezoelectric properties can be made to distort in an electric field:
      • This field can be generated by applying a voltage to an electrode that is near or on the crystal.
      • When the field is removed, the quartz will return to its original shape which generates a voltage.
        • The result is a fixed resonant frequency that can be used to provide a set of timed pulses to measure time:
          • This is how quartz clocks work.
